Figurinista faz história e se torna a primeira pessoa trans assumida a vencer um Tony Awards
Qween Jean foi premiada por seu trabalho no musical “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” durante a principal premiação do teatro dos EUA
A figurinista e ativista Qween Jean entrou para a história do teatro ao se tornar a primeira pessoa trans assumida a vencer um Tony Awards. A artista conquistou o prêmio de Melhor Figurino de Musical por seu trabalho em “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” durante a 79ª edição da premiação, realizada no último final de semana, em Nova York.
A vitória representa um marco para a representatividade LGBTQIA+ na Broadway. Inspirada na cultura ballroom, “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” reimagina o clássico musical de Andrew Lloyd Webber a partir de referências da cultura queer e trans, recebendo nove indicações ao Tony Awards deste ano. Além do prêmio de Qween Jean, a produção também venceu nas categorias de Melhor Direção de Musical e Melhor Coreografia.
Durante o discurso de agradecimento, a artista destacou a importância da visibilidade da comunidade trans e queer nos espaços culturais. “Esta experiência foi monumental. Estamos aqui pelo legado das pessoas queer, das pessoas trans. Estamos ocupando espaço da maneira que precisamos ocupar. Precisamos mudar o paradigma”, comentou a figurinista.
Além de figurinista, Qween Jean é reconhecida por seu trabalho como ativista. Ela é fundadora da organização Black Trans Liberation, iniciativa voltada ao apoio da comunidade trans e não binária em Nova York, oferecendo assistência social, alimentação e recursos habitacionais.
“O mundo agora está lutando profundamente contra tantos males, e sabemos, como sociedade, que quando nos unimos, podemos fazer mudanças reais e permanentes”, reforçou.
Em sua estreia na Broadway, Qween Jean recebeu duas indicações ao Tony Awards: uma por “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” e outra pelo trabalho desenvolvido na peça “Liberation”. Ao longo da temporada, ela também acumulou reconhecimentos em outras premiações do teatro norte-americano.
A edição de 2026 do Tony Awards foi marcada por diversos momentos históricos e celebrou uma temporada recorde para a Broadway. Entre os destaques da noite estiveram os musicais “Schmigadoon!” e “Cats: The Jellicle Ball”, além da consagração de Qween Jean, cuja vitória se tornou um dos momentos mais comentados da cerimônia.
